Smooth Sailing...relatively

Once the bleeding drama finally ended, we were able to breath a sigh of relief. I was still nervous to do anything in the nursery, or buy any fun baby stuff. I really didn't want a house full of cute baby stuff if there was a chance that they wouldn't make it.

We went in for the anatomy scan, or as I like to call it, inventory of the organs. It was at about 18 weeks. We found out that they were identical girls!! That is when it became REAL for me! To see my DAUGHTERS on the screen squirming around and trying to be illusive drove it home for me.

Only one would cooperate for a picture but since they are identical I figured one pic would be good. I can already tell they have daddy's nose.

We finally got started on the nursery. We had an old desk that my mother had given to my father for an anniversary years ago that I have been holding on to. I painted it and re-purposed it for a changing table and dresser. Worked out perfectly!

The knobs on the desk were a little worn so I bought plain wooden knobs and painted them with monkeys! I know we are having girls but they are still my little monkeys!

Those are also the colors we decided to paint the walls.

This is when the fun really began! :)

Our First Big Scare

At 14 weeks my morning sickness finally subsided! I was so grateful! My tummy was starting to poke out a little bit. It was feeling very real! I woke up at 5am one morning and realized I had wet the bed! I was mortified!! I ran to the bathroom trying not to wake my husband up. When I turned on the light, I realized I hadn't peed my bed at all. It was blood!! I began to sob! I couldn't believe this was happening!

My husband came running to see what was wrong. He immediately called the doctor who told us to run the to ER. They did blood tests and ultrasounds but couldn't find anything wrong. After three hours, they sent us home telling me to take it easy and follow up with my OB.

Later that evening, the bleeding had finally stopped and I was relaxing on the couch. It started again. This time with horrible cramping. We rushed back to the ER and had more tests done. The ER doctor kept telling me it wouldn't be long now before it would be over. He kept telling me it was most likely a miscarriage. We were devastated!!

They sent us in for another ultrasound and low and behold, both babies were FINE!!! They had no idea where the bleeding was coming from, but it wasn't from the babies!! The next day I was sent home for some bed rest and healing! It was terrifying!! I never want to experience anything like that again!!

The bleeding lasted about 6 weeks but they kept a really close eye on me and my cervix and we healed very well!!

More shock, more awe!

We found out that I was about 5 weeks along. We were all in shock and trying to wrap our heads around it. My daughter was 13 and had been an only child. In our home and in her fathers home. It had just been the three of us and we were about to add another person to that. As exciting as it was, we were overwhelmed and scared.

I had an appointment at 8 weeks for an ultrasound to see and hear the heart beat. I was so nervous! I was scared that they would find out that it was just a mass of cells, a cyst or tumor that made my body think it was pregnant. I was also nervous that since I am in my late 30's they would find more than one. Not that I wouldn't want that. Just made me nervous.

We all filed into the room where I draped myself in a sheet and patiently waited for the Dr. When he entered the room, the butterflies in my stomach went crazy! My daughter and husband took their places so they could see and the Dr. turned out the light. The Dr. looked around for about a minute and a half without saying a word! It was excruciating! Then he asked if we were all sitting down. He pointed to a spot on the screen and said, "there's a baby here..." then pointed to another spot and said "and a baby here!" It was TWINS!!! He looked a while longer and said that he was pretty sure they were identical but he would be positive in time.

We were ELATED!! Terrified! But elated!! Even while we were trying to get used to the idea (still trying), we started making phone calls. Everyone was OVER THE MOON!! Everyone IS over the moon!!

Shock and Awe!!

On the evening of April 26th, I decided to take a pregnancy test. I hadn't been feeling well for a few days and thought that just maybe! I was very skeptical because I hadn't had a cycle in almost a year! We had been trying to have children from the time we got married almost seven years ago!

My husband stopped at the store on his way home from work and purchased a two test pack. I know you are supposed to take them in the morning for best results, but I just couldn't wait! After dinner, I locked myself in the bathroom. The waiting was the hardest part! Those three minutes seemed more like three days!

I held the test, upside down in my shaking hand as I turned it over slowly. I couldn't believe my eyes! There were two pink lines!! I never thought this would happen! I walked out into the kitchen where my husband was washing the dinner dishes. I must have looked like I had seen a ghost because my husband dropped what he was doing and asked what was wrong. Holding the test behind my back, I said "your life is about to change more than you can possibly imagine!"

When I showed him the test he smiled big but there was panic in his eyes. He gave me a huge hug and asked if these tests were accurate. I just laughed and told him I would take the second one the next morning.

That week I asked around the get a reference for a good OB/GYN. I wasn't getting any good reports. My sister had just had her baby and was not pleased at all with her doctor or the hospital where she delivered. I looked up some names in the city that my insurance was associated with, found a name and made an appointment.

Long story short, the office I first went to was falling apart and felt very unsanitary and definitely wasn't where I wanted to be! So, I asked around some more and found a great Dr. His office was 45 minutes away and the hospital was an hour but as long as I was going to get good care, it was okay with me!!
